PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
Stimulants
Prescription stimulants are commonly used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Lesser stimulants can also be used to treat weight loss. This drug class is also commonly abused, and can be sold for large profits on the street.
Methylphenidate (Ritalin®)
Methylphenidate is sold in a variety of strengths, and is commonly prescribed for children with symptoms of ADHD. This drug may be commonly dispensed in schools, requiring that school employees understand the potential dangers if this drug is abused.
Methylphenidate is very similar to cocaine, when abused. The drug can be crushed and snorted like cocaine, or abused by injecting the processed pill into the bloodstream. Street values can vary from $8-$15 per pill.
Amphetamine Mixture (Adderall®) Adderall® is also a very popular drug for the treatment of ADHD with similar abuse potential as methylphenidate.
Phentermine (Adipex®, Fastin®, Ionamin®) Although phentermine is considered a lower level of prescription stimulant, these drugs have also seen years of abuse. Phentermine can be prescribed in Ohio for weight loss, but stringent regulations are required that limit the amount of pills, the time frame for which they can be prescribed and positive weight loss results.
Phentermine products are abused orally, and can achieve street prices of $6 per pill depending on supply and demand.
